Merge, Merge, Merge . . .
. . . sounds like what I do on Atlanta’s highways. However, this has to do with the information highway.
Today . . . Cisco Systems announced a deal to buy Scientific-Atlanta for $6.9 billion, reflecting Cisco’s ambitions to become the leading equipment supplier as lines blur between the Internet, TV and phone industries.
Here’s the thing: that set-top box brings in a lot of stuff into the home. However, today, it’s so dumb. It could and should be the gateway to the outside world. Recording and storing content on a DVR/TiVo is so stupid. How about searching, finding and watching the content via unknown file servers on the Net?
Maybe Cisco will be the one to make that happen. I certainly hope so.
