2008 - Tech Trends to Think About . . .
Typically, I make one big prediction for the upcoming year. However, since technology has invaded our lives, I have decided to reflect on a few major tech-trends.
1. The iPhone is the killer product. To call it a phone is a misnomer. For example, once you start watching YouTube videos on it, you realize that true on-demand video exists on your phone. And, it just might out-do the lousy television on-demand feature.
For more than ten years, companies have been trying to create a workable eBook. Well, with proper software, the iPhone could be an iBook too. Of course, the iPhone and future products from Google, Apple, Research in Motion (Blackberry), and others will turn our phones into a complete computer/entertainment center. It’s already there, however, it’s in its infancy.
Something to think about: While Nicholas Negroponte is attempting to place millions of $100 laptaps around the world, a slimmed down iPhone, could be priced close to the Negroponte laptop.
2. Google has a lot more power than you think. Google is spending over $2-billion a year deploying computer centers! It processes billions of search queries every day. Beyond its technology, its database of queries makes Google the most knowledgeable company in the world. Google is the envy of any marketing/advertising firm! Now, that’s a power no corporation has ever had.
3. With all the flow of information, we need to learn to be better editors. And, we need to do this “on-the-fly”. Whether you’re reading a blog, a New York Times article, watching Bill O’Reilly, viewing a video, or any other media, you need to be able to make quick decisions about the content. So, in addition to teaching writing, our educational system needs to teach everyone to be an editor.
4. Sadly, privacy is a thing of the past. With that in mind, be careful with the information that you divulge. Big Brother may or may not be watching you, however, everyone else is! Smile: You’re on candid camera.
5. A while back, in regard to online education, it was stated: If everyone could get a Harvard education, they would. Well, we’re a long way from providing high-quality online education to all. However, here’s an example of where we are headed.
That’s all folks. Have a wonderful Christmas and a very happy and healthy new year!
